MTN upgrades 3G network in Nigeria

African operator MTN is to upgrade its 3G network in Nigeria in partnership with Cambridge Broadband Networks (CBNL), according to local reports today.

Microwave network solutions provider CBNL will supply, install and commission backhaul equipment to enhance service quality on MTN Nigeria’s existing 3G network.

Olusegun Salami, senior manager of transmission access planning at MTN Nigeria, said: “We have seen a significant growth in subscribers accessing the internet via 3G over the past few years, and as a result will be modernising our network in order to expand capacity and continue delivering the customer experience and mobile access expected by our customer base throughout Nigeria.”

Under the terms of the agreement, CBNL will also deploy programme management and support services to ensure the work is carried out in a timely, efficient manner.

The upgrade will help the operator compete more aggressively with rival Etisalat Nigeria, which controls 15% of the market and earlier this year claimed to have hit 15 million subscribers.
