The company has deployed Ciena’s 100G coherent optical processors to support the 25,000km submarine cable, which delivers over 2Tbps of data traffic daily, in addition to transporting over 20 billion international voice minutes a year.
Ciena’s GeoMesh optical bypass technology is powered by WaveLogic 3 100G coherent optical processors.
The SAm-1 cable, which connects the US to Latin America, will now have access to premium bandwidth services for cloud computing, video and advanced business collaboration services, through the deployment of the technology.
The operator is also leveraging Ciena’s One Control Unified Management System to provide multi-layer service management capabilities to enable streamlined service activation, fault management and performance monitoring.
“Ciena’s GeoMesh solution incorporates 100G coherent optical, intelligent OTN switching and unique optical bypass technologies, which give our SAm-1 network better scale and bandwidth flexibility to meet current and future customer requirements,” said Alejandro Martinez-Rosillo, CTO and infrastructure director at Telefónica Global Solutions.
“Further, we are now in a better position to offer international bandwidth services at competitive prices, enhanced quality and to meet projected capacity needs in the region.”
Ciena’s converged packet optical technology is leveraged by Telefónica in 14 countries.
