Eircom turns to vectoring technology for broadband roll-out

Irish operator Eircom is utilising vectoring technology as part of its push to introduce higher broadband speeds across the country.

The upgrade is expected to provide half of all homes and businesses in Ireland with broadband speeds of above 70Mbps over ordinary landlines, while 27% of all Irish homes will receive speeds of up to 100Mbps.

Eircom's director of wholesale operations, Carolan Lennon told the Irish Independent that by 2015 it will be “one of the first operators in Europe to roll out this kind of technology”.

The Irish government aims to connect every home to fibre-speed broadband services of 30Mbs by the end of next year.

There are concerns that Eircom’s plan fails to bridge the digital divide affecting rural communities in Ireland, with 40,000 homes in Ireland still reliant on basic internet access.
