Optus extends TD-LTE network to more Australian cities

Australian mobile operator Optus has launched its TD-LTE 4G network in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide.

The launches follow a successful trial and the launch of the service in Canberra earlier this year. The network – coined ‘4G Plus’ by the company – is expected to deliver notably faster download speeds.

The TD-LTE network employs Optus’s 2300MHz and 1800MHz spectrum and is designed to provide increased capacity and a more stable connection.

David Epstein, VP of regulatory and corporate affairs at Optus, likened the network to adding a new lane to a motorway, which would ease congestion and allow more traffic to pass during peak times.

“It improves the consistency of a data experience when there are a lot of people wanting to use a network,” Epstein said.

The majority of the TD-LTE network operates in Melbourne and Epstein hopes to have the network running at Flemington Race Course in time for the Melbourne Cup in early November this year.

"We are confident that it will hold up to our major competitors,” Epstein added.

“We will have the best 4G experience in Australia.”
