SK Telecom and SoftBank to offer LTE roaming in South Korea and Japan

SK Telecom has announced that it is to launch an LTE roaming service throughout Japan, in collaboration with SoftBank.

The agreement allows for subscribers to roam in Japan and Korea on the LTE networks of both companies, with SK Telecom subscribers using LTE/LTE-Advanced services able to access similar data communications speeds over SoftBank’s network in Japan.

“SK Telecom is pleased to announce the launch of an LTE roaming service in Japan. With the goal of delivering greater value and convenience to customers, we are striving to expand our international roaming coverage,” said Kim Young-sup, SVP and head of collaboration, marketing office at SK Telecom.

The company has also announced an agreement with Mobily in Saudi Arabia and has already achieved the interworking of 1.8GHz FD-LTE and 2.6GHz TD-LTE trials.

SK Telecom said it hopes to soon commercialise the service in the country on both standards.

“Our efforts have also led us to achieve another important milestone in the field of LTE roaming. By achieving successful interworking between FD-LTE and TD-LTE trial networks in Saudi Arabia, we are confident that we will be able to bring LTE roaming services to another level,” added Young-sup.
