Arqiva and Virgin Media Business complete data superhighway network

Communications infrastructure company Arqiva has completed the build-out of a data superhighway through a new fibre network from Virgin Media Business.

The network connects up to 40 sites in the UK, with Virgin Media Business claiming it provides a super-fast delivery service for broadcast and mobile customers.

Designed to transmit data bundles of up to 16 Terabytes, the Arqnet2 network could eventually launch a new TV channel for customers, without being affected by demands placed on the network due to increased capacity.

Arqiva provides infrastructure for TV, radio, satellite and wireless communications in the UK and works with major broadcasters, including the BBC, BSkyB and ITV.

“Using Arqnet2 and working with Virgin Media Business, we are able to reassure our customers on the capacity and speed of the network, delivering a consistently great service,” said Mark Lovell, head of technical architecture at Arqiva.

George Wareing, sales director, mobile and broadcast at Virgin Media Business, said that by aiding the data explosion, media operators are able to access on-demand TV services with better service capabilities.

“The rise in TV catch-up services like ‘+1’, plus the demand for HD and 3D TV content mean media operators need networks that won’t buckle under the pressure of too much data being pushed through the pipes.”
