Vodafone Netherlands has announced the launch of its 4G network in four major cities in the Netherlands. The next-generation mobile service will be available initially in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht, with Vodafone becoming the second operator in the country to offer the technology behind KPN. UK-based CityFibre has extended its fibre network across the country with the launch of Gigabit-speed services in Bournemouth. The services are delivered over CityFibre’s 100% pure fibre network, and are designed to deliver greater efficiency and more competition, as well as enable further growth in the area. Lightower Fibre Networks has announced a 1,500 mile expansion of its US fibre network into Washington DC and Virginia. Lightower began the construction of 1,100 route miles covering Virginia and North Carolina in May 2012, and its metro network now covers an additional 400 route miles in the Washington DC area. Israel’s ECI Telecom has upgraded the German Research Network, Deutsches Forschungsnetz (DFN-Verein) network, to enable it to deliver 100G services. The DFN-Verein network is a not-for-profit organisation for science and research in Germany, connecting more than 750 universities and research institutes on its X-WiN network. [read more]




 

Telekom Austria’s Austrian subsidiary, A1, has partnered with German solutions provider Coriant to increase the capacity on its network infrastructure. Coriant will deploy its intelligent optical transport platform on A1’s DWDM network, in order to enhance the performance of its fixed-line and mobile services offerings. [read more]


 

South Korea’s SK Telecom has announced the launch of LTE services in Canada and Switzerland. The company will launch the services in partnership with Canadian operator Rogers Communications and Swisscom, with the Asian operator significantly stepping up its interests in international markets. Wireless network operator iPass is to deliver global Wifi network infrastructure for video calling application Skype. The partnership is designed to expand the reach of Skype’s services by providing further hotspots in more locations worldwide. [read more]


 

Vodafone has revealed it is to launch 4G services to UK customers on August 29 2013. The initial launch will cover customers in London, with plans to roll out the service to a further 12 cities, including Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield, by the year end. [read more]


 

Bezeq Israel Telecom is rapidly deploying its fibre-optic network in the country, and expects the infrastructure to be a main source for growth for the company. The leading Israeli telecoms operator posted a 14% increase on its Q2 profit, and the company told reporters that this figure was largely fuelled by a growth in internet customers. [read more]


 

Level 3 has announced an agreement to provide a North American satellite gateway for O3b Networks. US provider Level 3 said it has signed the agreement to provide transport services via a satellite gateway, allowing O3b to link its gigabit IP network connectivity and bandwidth services to customers located in the US, Caribbean and Mexico.
