SES and Portugal Telecom ink capacity renewal deals

Satellite provider SES has signed two capacity renewal agreements with Portugal Telecom to meet the connectivity demands from the archipelago of the Azores.

Under terms of the agreements, Portugal Telecom will connect the remote islands of Flores and Corvo on the Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, using over 100MHz of capacity.

“The renewals with Portugal Telecom illustrate our ongoing commitment to provide communication services in all corners of the world,” said Deepak Mathur, SVP for Asia at SES.

“The utilisation of satellite capacity in Africa enables Portugal Telecom to respond promptly to the connectivity needs of corporations which need constant connectivity between Africa and Portugal.”

The deals are also expected to enable Portugal to enhance its position as an integrated provider for Africa, with the ability to deliver mobile backhaul and corporate networks to countries such as Angola, São Tomé and Mozambique.

It appears SES is looking to increase its global footprint, as the deals follow reports earlier this month that the company is enhancing its presence in the Indonesian market.
