Russian billionaire considers Telefónica Czech Republic

Russian tycoon and owner of the country’s largest mobile operator MTS, Vladimir Evtushenkov is looking at a potential acquisition of Telefónica Czech Republic, Bloomberg reports.

Evtushenkov is thought to be targeting several takeovers in a number of European markets, in a bid to expand MTS’ telecommunications reach across the region.

Evtushenkov told reporters he does not have any confirmed agreements as yet, but is also looking at investing in Tele2 Russia, and several operations in India, where MTS already has a mobile presence.

The acquisition of Telefónica Czech Republic would mark a significant leap for MTS in the European market, a boost for the Russian company which has been growing at its slowest pace since 2009.

This hunger for expansion is reflected in the company’s announcement earlier this month that MTS is to deploy its FDD LTE network in Moscow later this year.

Spokespeople from both Telefónica and Telefónica Czech Republic declined to comment to reporters.
