Reliance Communications partners with Tata for 2G roaming

Reliance Communications (RCom) and Tata Teleservices (TTSL) have signed a 2G intra-circle roaming agreement, in a bid to reduce costs and enhance network coverage in India.

Under terms of the agreement, RCom will use 5,000 TTSL towers across 14 GSM circles, and TTSL will benefit from access to the same number of towers in RCom’s CDMA network.

Both operators offer dual-technology services, and the deal will provide additional reach across the country for RCom, with access to Airtel and Loop’s networks.

RCom has signed a number of expansion agreements in previous months and the intra-circle roaming (ICR) deal forms part of what a company spokesperson called the “Smart Network Expansion plan” launched in April this year.

Hemant Joshi, partner at Deloitte Haskins & Sells, told local reporters: “2G ICRs help operators reduce capex and improve efficiency; in the meantime operators can first gain subscribers and later invest in the networks.”

Reliance Communications is headed by Anil Ambani, one half of the Ambani telecoms duo, who this year collaborated in a 4G deal following a widely-reported feud.
