The undersea cable project is designed to improve competition in the region, as well as deliver further opportunities for social and economic development.
Spanning over 3,000km, the infrastructure will connect the islands of Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua and is expected to be able to support data speeds of 100Gbps.
With a total capacity of up to 16Tbps, the cable forms part of Telkom Indonesia’s Nusantara Super Highway, designed to create more efficient terrestrial and subsea infrastructure in the archipelago.
According to Arief Yahya, president director of Telkom Indonesia, the project with Alcatal-Lucent “is contributing to bridging the digital divide and offering people a wider range of communications options and services”.
Alcatel-Lucent will be responsible for project management, system design, marine operations and system commissioning of the project, and will also implement its end-to-end submarine management system.
“Expanding connectivity and increasing capacity for data services in areas which are not yet adequately served is vital to improve broadband access for all,” said Philippe Dumont, president of Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks.
“We are pleased to support Telkom Indonesia in accelerating the expansion of internet connectivity to remote areas and overcoming the structural and geographic constraints that limit broadband penetration.”
Earlier this week, Alcatel-Lucent partnered with Ghanaian operator Surfline Communications to better connectivity in West Africa via a 4G network deployment.
