MTS to launch FDD LTE network

Russian operator MTS has selected Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to begin the deployment of its FDD LTE networks in Moscow and Central Russia regions during the third quarter of 2013.

The operator will utilise 2600MHz and 800MHz frequency bands for the long-term evolution technology network, which is hoped to help cater to the growth in demand for mobile broadband services in Russia.

The move builds on the launch of the operator’s 4G TD-LTE network, which went live in Moscow and 40 surrounding population centres last year.

“By adding FDD LTE, we will be able to take full advantage of our spectrum allocation, provide higher capacity, and deliver the superior data experience that our subscribers deserve,” said Andrey Ushatskiy, VP and CTO of MTS Group.

Under the three year contract, NSN will be the sole supplier of FDD LTE radio access, IP core network equipment and services. It will also upgrade the operator’s existing Single RAN platform using its Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station.
