Alcatel-Lucent and Telenor Group partner for enhanced mobile services

Alcatel-Lucent has signed a three-year contract with Telenor Group for a global framework designed to deliver enhanced mobile services to customers.

The agreement will reportedly provide buffering-free mobile video, and an overall improved internet service quality to Telenor’s customers.

Mobile internet optimisation is also expected to be deployed across Telenor’s 2G, 3G and 4G networks in Europe and Asia.

“Telenor is committed to giving our customers the best possible experience when they use our networks,” said Witold Sitek, SVP of technology at Telenor Group.

“As their passion for video from sites like YouTube grows, we want to make sure we keep our network capacity and intelligence one step ahead of demand.”

Alcatel-Lucent is expected to address the high demands for traffic, identified by Telenor, created by OTT sites such as YouTube and Netflix.

The equipment vendor’s solution is designed to automatically adapt video streams to their most suitable format, in accordance with customer location, device and subscription level.

“Our own network analytics show an explosion in the use of video as we move from 3G to 4G networks,” said Luis Martinez Amago, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s EMEA region.

“Using our professional services expertise and experience, we are integrating Alcatel-Lucent and partner products to create an innovative solution that helps Telenor deal with this explosion in video traffic.”

The deal could provide a much-needed boost for Alcatel-Lucent which reported a company-wide financial restructure earlier this month.
