NTT DoCoMo launches LTE base station in Japan

Japanese mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo, has announced the launch of an LTE base station with real-time 3G services.

The base station is operational on the company’s Xi LTE and Forma 3G networks in Japan and is reportedly one 10th the size and less than one fifth the weight of an average LTE base station.

It is designed to be an all-weather facility, with the ability to manage expansion in low traffic, rural areas.

Electricity consumption is closely monitored and NTT DoCoMo hopes this to be the start of a more eco-friendly operation.

The launch follows the company’s recent partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks for LTE services in Guam, and NTT DoCoMo plans to double its existing base stations to 50,000 by early 2014.
