Hibernia Networks reveals new partner for Project express cable deployment

Bjarni Thorvardarson, CEO of Hibernia Networks has revealed it has now partnered with TE Subcom for the implementation of its Project Express Cable.

The company told Capacity earlier this year it had suspended work with Chinese vendor Huawei for the cable build-out, following concerns from several North American firms over the reported cyber security threat coming from China.

Thorvardarson said that halfway through the project, the company had to change its vendor because of the issue.

“It was a very unfortunate thing that cost us a substantial amount, and this has much to do with issues with Huawei,” he said.

The project implementation started in 2010 and aims to connect London, UK, to Halifax, US. Hibernia began discussions with TE Subcom a few months ago, and it has now fully contracted the US-based vendor. He further stressed that the switchover did not represent a halt in progress of the cable, which is the first to be deployed across the Atlantic in over a decade.
