Telefónica UK has signed a 10 year agreement with BT for it to deliver 4G services to 02 mobile customers. BT has been searching for a partner in the field, and will reportedly build a high-capacity transmission network for Telefónica UK’s mobile unit, O2, to help it address the growing demand for mobile data. Telecom Italia could spin-off its fixed-line network in an effort to merge its wireless unit with Hutchison Whampoa, according to reports. Local reports indicate the Italian operator has appointed a panel of directors to investigate possibilities of floating its fixed-line network on the stock market. [read more]




 

BICS has partnered with solution provider cVidya to use its FraudView service for detecting and preventing fraud across its wholesale network. BICS has identified itself as vulnerable to fraud and other market-related risks, which has increased as its wholesale network reportedly experiences a high level of voice traffic from its greater global reach. NTT Communications’ Russian subsidiary is set to launch data centre services in IXcellerate’s Moscow data centre. IXcellerate’s Moscow One carrier-neutral data centre began operating in November 2012, and NTT Com Russia will initially roll out collocation services via the data centre in May this year. SES has selected BeyonDSL to distribute its SES Broadband service, Satellite Internet, across the UK and Ireland. The service uses Ka-band capacity on SES’s Astra 2F satellite and offers up to 20 Mbps download speeds for people who do not have access to fixed-line broadband. [read more]



 

Vodafone Spain has entered into a five year agreement with Huawei to provide management and maintenance services to its network. Under terms of the agreement, Huawei is expected to manage Vodafone Spain’s ADSL and mobile access network across the country. [read more]




 

Telekom Austria Group has launched its 100G network spanning Central and Eastern Europe. The first section of the network from Zagreb to Osijek and Ilok in Croatia is operational following a successful trial. [read more]



 

The international carrier unit of Virgin Mobile Middle East and Africa, Eris Telecom, has selected DIGITALK’s Carrier Cloud solution to support the routing of its international voice traffic. The UK-based vendor’s solution is expected to allow Eris Telecom to expand its capacity and extend its services to further regions, as part of the operator’s strategy for growth. [read more]


Ericsson’s plant in Brazil is expected to reach its full capacity this year as the growing demand for mobile data starts taking effect. There has been a significant increase in smartphone proliferation in the region, leading to a higher demand for faster networks, with pressure now on operators in Latin America to improve legacy infrastructure. Telefónica Deutschland has signed a memorandum of understanding to increase its usage of Deutsche Telekom’s domestic fixed-line network. Telefónica decided to invest in Deutsche Telekom’s fixed-line network as it is set to provide faster speeds than cable network operators in a staged programme which will be completed by 2019, according to Deutsche Telekom.
