Liberty Global prepares bid for Kabel Deutschland

Liberty Global is preparing a bid for Kabel Deutschland Holding AG, according to reports.

Initial discussions have been held between Liberty Global CEO Michael Fries and Lutz Schueler, CEO of Liberty subsidiary Unity Media KabelBW, to ready a proposed deal for the German cable operator.

Unity Media KabelBW was formed after Liberty purchased KabelBW in 2011 and it combined the company with its other subsidiary, Unity Media.

The merger united Germany’s second and third largest operators and is expected to create problems with competition regulators over any further Liberty acquisitions in the country.

Kabel Deutschland scrapped plans to acquire Tele Columbus after German competition regulator, Federal Cartel Office, blocked the deal on anti-trust concerns in February 2013.

A deal between Liberty and Kabel Deutschland is also thought to receive a similar outcome.
