Three Ireland has selected Samsung Electronics as its sole provider of LTE solutions across its network. The deal represents Samsung's second European 4G roll out. [read more]



 

UK mobile operator EE has announced plans to double the speed and capacity of its 4G service as it looks to attract one million more 4G users by the end of the year. The company, which is jointly owned by Orange and T-Mobile and is presently the only UK operator offering 4G, plans to launch the upgrade this summer in 10 UK cities, which it claims will see average speeds climb to 20Mbps. [read more]



 

Huawei has secured a contract to roll out 4G network infrastructure for Telecom New Zealand. The New Zealand operator is said to have selected Huawei over its long-standing technology partner Alcatel-Lucent. [read more]



 

Myanmar's mobile licence auction has attracted 22 bidders for two mobile licences to own, manage and operate a network in the country for a 15 year period. The country formerly known as Burma has actively encouraged a number of large operators and consortiums for the licences. [read more]




 

Vodafone Netherlands has selected software company OpenCloud to support the launch of LTE services. Following the Dutch spectrum auction in December 2012, bidders are expected to roll out LTE services quickly in the market this year, with Vodafone Netherlands striking the deal in a bid to utilise OpenCloud's open standards based Rhino products.  [read more]



 

German cable operator Kabel Deutschland has selected ADVA Optical Networking to access its 100G coherent transport to be utilised on its new nationwide backbone network. Operating as the largest cable operator in Germany, Kabel Deutschland will deploy 100G technology, across its network that presently consists of 26 major nodes and 50 intermediate sites. [read more]



 

AT&T has drawn the battle lines with Google after both companies announced they would build rivalling fibre optic broadband cables in Austin, Texas. The move, intended to increase download speeds to 1Gbps, comes after Google Fiber was successfully rolled-out in Kansas City last year.  [read more]



 

Canadian operator Shaw Communications has claimed to have completed the first field trial of 400Gbps over a live network in North America. Shaw used Alcatel-Lucent's optical technology to increase data transmission over a 400km route between Calgary and Edmonton in Alberta, Canada.  [read more]



 

Internet exchange operator DE-CIX has begun deploying 100G Ethernet interconnection platform in Frankfurt, which the company claims will be the world's largest. German-based DE-CIX started implementing its Apollon interconnection service in preparation of increased demand for peering services and said it will be operational by December 2013.  [read more]

Illinois Fiber Resources Group (iFiber) has selected network specialist Ciena to deploy its platform solutions throughout north western Illinois. The move is hoped to address the Illinois-based company's concerns over slow internet speeds particularly in the northern part of the state. [read more]
