Former Ofcom chief set to leave Alcatel-Lucent

Alcatel-Lucent CMO Stephen Carter is set to leave the company after serving as head of marketing and strategy for three years.

Carter, previously chief executive at UK watchdog Ofcom, departs as the equipment manufacturer begins a restructuring programme which is set to cut 5,500 jobs under incoming CEO Michel Combes, the former Vodafone executive.

Alcatel-Lucent reported a net loss of $1.4 billion for last year and Combes is thought to be instilling plans to reduce operating costs by $1.25 billion.

Sources close to Carter have confirmed he will continue to work for the Paris-based equipment manufacturer on some special projects over the next few months, according to the Financial Times.

The leaving CMO, 49, was Ofcom’s founding chief executive before being seconded by then communications minister Gordon Brown as his chief of strategy in 2007.

Carter had a pivotal role in the Digital Britain report in 2010, shaping the groundwork for British telecom’s policies such as superfast broadband.
