ITPC and Ericsson partner in network upgrade

Ericsson has been selected by the ITPC (Iraqi Telecommunications and Post Company) to introduce IP technology and upgrade the operator’s wireline network.

The partnership positions Ericsson as the sole supplier for ITPC’s core network and the Swedish equipment provider will reportedly enable the transition of ITPC’s wireline network to a next-generation network.

“With Ericsson IP technology and the transition of ITPC network to the next-generation network, ITPC will increase their operational efficiency while maintaining the ultimate customer experience and attracting new customers,” Ericsson said in a statement.

The expansion is expected to cater for an additional four million subscribers in Iraq and will also provide a higher-quality service.

"This deployment is particularly exciting as it will put us one step closer to our goal of satisfying our customers and grow our network to nine million subscribers by 2015, adding four million subscribers to our subscriber base,” said Amir Al Bayati, deputy minister of communication for technical affairs in Iraq.

“Ericsson first deployed the network, and choosing them for this expansion was a natural decision. We have all confidence in Ericsson's capabilities to deliver beyond our expectations."

ITPC has over 1.7 million subscribers and through the transition, hopes to prepare its network for an eventual movement to LTE services.

Ericsson has entered into several network upgrade deals so far this year; its latest partnership being with MetroPCS last week.
