UAE-IX snaps up four customers in a week

UAE-IX has secured four new customers in the last week, bringing its customer base to a total of 15 since launching last October.

UAE-IX's latest customers include CDNetworks from Korea, Integrated Telecom Company (ITC) from Saudi Arabia, Cable & Wireless Seychelles and Cable & Wireless International.

Marco Brandstaetter, business development manager at DE-CIX, told Capacity Daily that the UAE-IX is, to date, the company's fastest growing new internet exchange: "The addition of these new customers proves we are not just a 100% neutral internet exchange for the Middle East, but also a hub between Africa, Asia and Europe," he added.

The company has also moved to strengthen its position in the Middle Eastern market through a new partnership with Equinix, which will see UAE-IX also hosted in Equinix's data centre. The move is due to go live next week and could help drive additional customers to the exchange.

DE-CIX was approached by the UAE regulator, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), to establish an internet exchange in Dubai and subsequently launched UAE-IX last October.

UAE-IX aims to attract content distributors, international carriers and ISPs to interconnect and terminate their traffic in the Middle East, opening up the market to a wider array of players.

Other UAE-IX customers include CDN provider Akamai, Austria's Anexia, CMC Networks of Mauritius, UAE provider du, Kuwait's Gulfsat Communications Company, Turkey's Medianova Internet, Packet Clearing House, Blackberry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM), India's Sify Technologies and Kuwait's Zajil International Telecom Company.
