Indosat selects Alcatel-Lucent for mobile broadband support

Indonesian provider Indosat has selected Alcatel-Lucent to boost its capacity of data connections to support its mobile broadband network.

The move is designed to aid Indosat’s network for 3G mobile broadband services, and lay the groundwork for the introduction of new technologies.

Demand in Indonesia is beginning to explode as the uptake of video and social networking on mobile devices increases at an exponential rate.

The company is also upgrading its data transport and mobile backhaul networks throughout the country with internet/multiprotocol label switching (IP/MPLS) and microwave packet transport technology from Alcatel-Lucent.

Through the development, Indosat believes it can streamline its network to aid performance, while cutting operational costs.

“Our customers are looking to access video, gaming, multimedia and social networking services on their mobile devices, which requires a faster mobile backhaul network to support the resulting data traffic,” said Hans Morizt, director and CTO at Indosat. “We need a network that can grow quickly and address fast evolving customer requirements without breaking the bank. The all-IP infrastructure from Alcatel-Lucent addresses all of these requirements.”

Alcatel-Lucent said Indosat’s commitment to making the development is an indication that the company is intent on increasing its customer base with new services without “taxing their infrastructure”, according to Rajeev Singh Molares, president Asia-Pacific at Alcatel-Lucent.

He added: “Indosat has been moving quickly to prepare its network for the demands of the future and we are pleased to expand our collaboration into the mobile backhaul space.”
