Geo Networks targets Vodafone infrastructure deal

Network solutions provider Geo Networks has told Capacity Daily it is in the market to win a major mobile services contract in the UK and is targeting Vodafone.

Vodafone is presently tied into a long-term contract with Global Crossing, but Nick Ballard, sales director, carrier & mobile, said the company had already spoken to Vodafone and claimed the UK operator “likes many elements of our network, including its security”.

Geo Networks operates HGC-owned 3, and Ballard said any possible deal with Vodafone would be an attractive proposition for both parties. He said: “Vodafone still has a substantial amount of time to run on its present infrastructure deal, but I would expect to hold further conversations in the future.”

Vodafone’s recent takeover of Cable&Wireless Worldwide could however hinder any possible tie up, and Ballard confessed it will be up to Vodafone to assess what they can gain from their new acquisition.

“It will be a question of seeing what they can fill from CWW, and also how much more they will be willing to invest. They may not need another contract similar to the one they have with Global Crossing.”

Ballard claimed Geo Networks is “disruptive by DNA”. The company has recently begun to connect data centres through fibre, build new networks and then commercialise the offering for other players. “There are very few operators that would be able to facilitate that in the market or provide that sort of fibre access,” added Ballard.
