Operators are said to be more closely examining their redundancy configuration on the NGN following the aftermath of the hurricane, which hit the east coast of the US late last month.
“Services in the US were given a safety net elsewhere in the network architecture, using the DE-CIX NGN in Europe. Now we are thinking about how to provide a safety net using the DE-CIX NGN to European operators,” said XConnect’s Enrique Garcia-Ayesta, VP of EMEA and Latam.
Both DE-CIX and XConnect believe events in the US will prompt operators in Europe to look at their own redundancy configuration. “National operators wouldn’t naturally think about connecting somewhere outside of their country, but by establishing a safety net like this you can ensure service will continue if disaster occurs,” added Garcia-Ayesta.
DE-CIX and XConnect partnered in early September to launch the DE-CIX NGN. It offers national and international network operators a secure hub for NGN interconnection, and is said to combine DE-CIX’s market reach and experience of managing internet exchange services with XConnect’s expertise in deploying federation-based interconnection and ENUM registry services.
