Telefónica integrates Smart City M2M portfolio

Telefónica has integrated its M2M Smart Cities offering into a global solution.

The Spanish carrier’s Smart City product so far has 27 different applications, including traffic management, smart parking and environmental and agricultural monitoring.

The offering is designed to create an open ecosystem enabling town councils, urban service providers and entrepreneurs to integrate all the technology required by smart city services into a single solution.

Telefónica said that the solution will generate new business models, helping entrepreneurs develop their own applications on top of it, while towns will be able improve management and optimise the services they offer to citizens.

"With this offering, Telefónica is demonstrating its capacity to respond in an open and flexible manner to the needs of its customers in the increasingly important M2M sector. We are convinced that the solution we are presenting will allow us to deliver an integrated, quality solution which covers the whole value chain in Smart Cities", said Carlos Morales, global M2M director at Telefónica Digital.

As part of the integration, Telefónica has also announced two cooperation agreements with smart parking specialist Streetline and M2M sensor developer Libelium.

The agreement with Streetline will offer Smart City customers the option of using Streetline’s smart parking solution for real-time vehicle detection and telematic services and applications.

Telefónica’s agreement with Libelium will involve integration of the company’s wireless sensors into the Telefónica M2M portfolio.
