MetroPCS launches RCS services on LTE network

MetroPCS Communications has commercially launched Rich Communication Services (RCS) on its LTE network.

The company will offer its Rich Communication Services under the GSMA-licensed joyn brand, and will run under the GSMA RCS 5.0 standard.

MetroPCS will deliver a unified way of services, which includes integrated instant messaging, chat, Wifi and video calling to enable a simplified way to share content.

RCS will support LTE joyn-enabled smartphones, and feature other applications, including content presence which features contact availability, status sync, calendar sync and social network capabilities.

In addition, the services will feature enriched chat, featuring threaded conversations, instant messaging and group chat, conversational view and delivery of read notifications, with video calling services integrated within.

The US operator, presently subject to acquisition interest from T-Mobile USA, plans to roll out additional RCS-enabled 4G smartphones and services this year and throughout 2013.
