France Telecom steps up recruitment drive

France Telecom has announced it is to recruit 4,000 new employees over the next three years.

In a move that goes against the trend of shrinking workforces at major telecoms companies in Europe, France Telecom also plans to integrate 5,000 young people on work study placements at the company.

A number of telecoms firms, including T-Mobile USA, LightSquared, Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent, have announced job cuts in recent months.

The company said it has taken steps to maintain a strong recruitment policy despite difficult economic context, the launch of a fourth operator in the country, in addition to decreased margins across the group.

France Telecom expressed a commitment to make employment security an absolute priority, which allows employees job stability and flexible working time, policies which already benefit over 7,000 employees.

The French operator has been under investigation in the past for alleged workplace bullying following 35 employee suicides between 2008 and 2009.
