Storage Engine invests in Emerald Networks’ transatlantic cable

Emerald Networks, the company looking to build a subsea cable system connecting North America to Europe and Iceland, has received a strategic investment from data storage provider Storage Engine (SEI).

The undisclosed investment comes with the purpose of bringing public and private cloud, along with storage management solutions and continuous data protection, to Iceland’s developing data centre industry.

“We are very excited to be working with SEI and having them become an investor of Emerald Networks," said William Marra, CEO of Emerald Networks.

"This investment validates what we have been saying about the need to provide Iceland with cost-effective bandwidth to the United States and Europe. We are extremely pleased and looking forward to a productive and long-term relationship with SEI."

Emeralds claims that the technologies being implemented in the initiative will significantly lower costs associated with both high performance computing and data storage solutions in Iceland.

The Emerald cable is designed to be a low latency route with open network architecture. It is claimed to be the first 100G system connecting Shirley, New York to the West Coast of Ireland, with a branch to Grindavik, Iceland. Future connectivity is also planned to Lisbon Portugal.

The system is scheduled to be ready for service by mid-2014.
