Cameroon seeks third mobile operator

Cameroon’s government is reportedly looking to attract a third mobile operator to the country.

Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Jean-Pierre Biyiti bi Essam has called for expressions of interest in the country’s third mobile operator licence, which includes 3G frequencies, according to the Cameroon tribune.

Applicants must not already be active in Cameroon and have $200 million of equity as of December 31 2011.The ministry is seeking to establish a short list of potential investors with the winning applicant selected on July 20 2012.

The winner will have to compete with MTN Cameroon, which had 55.3% mobile subscriber share in December 2011 and Orange Cameroon with 44.7% subscriber share during the same period. Cameroon’s mobile market had approximately 11.37 million subscribers in March 2012 with a population penetration of just over 50%, according to TeleGeography.
