P&T Luxembourg partner with Alcatel-Lucent

Alcatel-Lucent is to deploy ultra-fast broadband in yet another country after signing a deal with P&T Luxembourg to provide access throughout the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Luxembourg, a small but lucrative market, will now have access to fibre-based broadband technology through its main operator P&T Luxembourg, and provide customers with a range of broadband services.

It is thought the deal further accelerates the belief that Luxembourg can be established as one of the leading financial and trade centres in Europe, considering its advantageous location for businesses.

“Luxembourg has an important role in the European and international financial business system,” said Serge Eiffes, head of the fixed access network department at P&T Luxembourg. “By introducing ultra-fast broadband access, we are helping to ensure that Luxembourg maintains and strengthens its position as a global centre for economic activity and realising governments Ultra High Broadband Strategy.”

The government initiative is based on developing infrastructure in the country and making internet in Luxembourg a lot faster. Its overall aims is to provide FTTH services to 100% of the population, proving 100Mbps internet connection to every household by 2015, with 1Gbps speeds expected by 2020.

“This project underlines our expertise in innovative next-generation access technologies that are delivering the highest capacity available in the market today,” added Luc Defieuw, CEO at Alcatel-Lucent Bell.

Alcatel-Lucent claims one in three fixed line subscribers globally are using an access network provided by the company.
