Huawei to deploy TD LTE network in Nigeria

Huawei has been selected by Nigerian operator, Zoda Fones, to build what is claimed to be Africa’s first TD LTE commercial network. The network will cover the Nigerian capital, Abuja, and its surrounding areas.

Zoda Fones’ TD LTE network will use Huawei’s end-to-end singleRAN TD LTE solution, consisting of a radio access network and core network solutions.

Huawei’s president of WiMax and TDS and LTE networks, Deng Taihua, said: "It is an honour for Huawei to deploy western Africa's first TD LTE commercial network for Zoda Fones.” He continued: “Huawei is proud of this important project for Zoda Fones, as it will greatly influence the development of LTE networks in Africa."

Dr. A. Aliyu, president of Zoda Fones was pleased with the agreement: "The deployment of Nigeria's first LTE TDD commercial network and western Africa's first TD LTE commercial network is a milestone for mobile broadband development in western Africa.”

FD LTE has so far been the dominant LTE standard globally, largely thanks to adoption of the technology in the US market by Verizon and AT&T. Despite this the TD LTE standard has been gaining ground. The launch of TD LTE in Africa and the recently announced TD LTE testing agreement between China Mobile and Clearwire are likely to encourage more support for the technology.
