Indonesia-Malaysia submarine cable system completed

The Batam-Dumai-Melaka (BDM) submarine cable system linking Indonesia and Malaysia has been completed.

The cable system is approximately 400km in length with two routes, Melaka-Batam and Melaka-Dumai. It consists of four fibre pairs and is designed to provide 1.28 Tbps of capacity, using DWDM technology.

Construction of the cable system began in February 2011 with the signing of an agreement between Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM), PT XL Axiata (XL) and PT Mora Telematika. The cable’s Malaysian landing station was provided by TM and its Indonesian landing station by XL.

According to local sources, EVP of Global at TM, Mohamad Rozaimy Abd Rahman said that the BDM link will benefit not only the consortium members but all countries and regions directly connected to Malaysia and Indonesia.

BDM will also provide interconnection with other major cable systems connecting to Europe, the US, Africa and other parts of Asia.
