Data delivery costs to reach over $370 billion by 2016

Global mobile network operator (MNO) data delivery costs could reach over $370 billion annually by 2016, according to a new study from Juniper Research.

This represents a seven-fold increase on the data delivery costs incurred in 2010, which stood at $53 billion.

The increase in data delivery costs will occur, it says, despite the increased deployment and utilisation of LTE networks. However, the analyst firm goes on to highlight that operating costs could be significantly reduced by the deployment of data offload solutions, namely Wifi networks and femtocells, as well as the adoption of network optimisation techniques to facilitate flow control.

Base stations are another area where Juniper Research has identified potential savings, particularly generated by both active and passive network sharing. This, the report goes on to say, can help reduce site lease costs and energy loss by using feeder-less

sites and remote radio heads.
