Vocus buys SEA-ME-WE-3 capacity and establishes Singapore PoP

Vocus Communications, a dark fibre, data centre operator is establishing a PoP in Singapore and has invested in capacity on the SEA-ME-WE-3 Perth to Singapore submarine cable system.

The Singapore PoP is located in the Equinix data centre and connects to Vocus’ Perth iX data centre via the low latency SEA-ME-WE-3 cable. The cable provides the only direct connection between Australia and South East Asia and allows connection onward to Asia and Europe.

The new PoP and capacity are expected to be attractive to the banking and finance markets and will provide faster connection speeds to important content and corporate hubs in South East Asia.

“Our customers will see reduced latency and improved performance to all major destinations in South East Asia. With the growing demand for Ethernet and IP connectivity to countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong, there’s no doubt that this faster connection will have a very positive impact on both our current and potential customers,” said James Spenceley, Vocus CEO.

Vocus has already signed its first major customer for the service, which was announced following the company’s purchase of the Perth iX data centre in March. The Perth Data centre was bought for AUS $6.275 million with up to an additional AUS $725,000 if the business exceeds FY12 forecasts.
