There has been solid growth in the number of FTTH/B homes passed in the first half of 2011, shows research by IDATE, showing an increase of 26%. This takes the numbers of homes passed to 25 million.

However, during the same period, the number of FTTH/B subscribers has increased by a more modest 14%, with a total of nearly 4.6 million subscribers.

Russia leads the way in FTTH/B, with 5.1 million FTTH/B subscribers, and 11.7 million homes passed. Ukraine follows close behind, with nearly 5 million subscribers.

Scandinavian countries are leading the way in western Europe: Sweden has 625,000 subscribers, while Norway has 62% penetration rates. However, the situation across Europe as a whole is quite disparate, with France only having a penetration rate of 10%.

Ethernet is still the first choice in terms of technology deployed, and represented 71% of all FTTH/B roll outs at the end of June 2011.
