Telekom Malaysia and Akamai sign partnership at Capacity Asia 2011

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) has struck a partnership with cloud platform provider Akamai, announced this morning at Capacity Asia 2011 in Kuala Lumpur.

The deal will see Akamai’s NetStorage application hosted on TM’s network, and the storage application will be available to the operator’s domestic and regional customers through PoP connectivity. NetStorage is a managed services platform available for storage of large volumes of data and offers connectivity to multiple ISPs, and it will be deployed in TM’s data centre in Cyberjaya, which will be fully operational by the end of this year.

Speaking at Capacity Asia, where the signing ceremony between the two companies was completed, Rozaimy Rahman, EVP at TM Global said: “TM is very pleased with this collaboration with Akamai on the NetStorage arrangement, which sees Akamai’s only such storage facility in South Asia hosted in Malaysia. The Akamai NetStorage, which will also attract high volume of internet traffic to TM’s network, will definitely strengthen Malaysia’s position as a regional internet hub.”

The Malaysian operator said it has been aggressively targeting the improvement of its IP service platform over the past year, and it has recently introduced IPv6 capability to its customers. Akamai also noted Malaysia’s potential as an internet hub, and believes the region is well positioned to interconnect with other countries in Asia-Pacific.

“Today’s hyperconnected world is leading to enormous demand on data traffic and storage capacity on the internet,” said David Rich, vice president of Asia-Pacific at Akamai. “Malaysia has sound internet infrastructure and this new collaborative effort between Akamai and TM will help cement the value of Malaysia as an important internet hub in the region.”

TM’s Berhad subsidiary, which focusses on data services, claims it is the largest data centre provider in the region, with 14 carrier neutral facilities nationwide, all backed by a nationwide high-speed IP network.
