Greater cable connections for Cyprus

Two new cables connecting Cyprus to Greece and Cyprus to France have been launched to increase capacity and reduce latency between the Mediterranean island and the continent.

Telecom Italia Sparkle (TIS) has signed an agreement with Cypriot telecoms provider Cyta to launch the ATHENA cable which is designed to link Cyprus to Greece.

The ATHENA submarine cable is due to come into full commercial service by the end of this year. TIS’s Mediterranean operations, MedNautilus, will link the submarine cable from its backbone landing station in Athens to connect to Cyta’s landing station in Yeroskipos.

TIS claims that the ATHENA cable will be the first direct fully redundant ring configured network between Cyprus and Greece. The agreement will also enable Cyta to access additional destinations from MedNautilus’ landing station in Athens.

“The new ATHENA subsystem provides Cyta and MedNautilus with reciprocal business opportunities to access new markets,” added Yiannis Koulias, director of national and international wholesale at Cyta.
