New deal for Columbia and Mexico

The governments of Columbia and Mexico have established a joint telecoms and IT framework.

The new framework for co-operation between the two nations will cover their telecommunications and IT sectors. It will establish mechanisms for co-operation on network security, and develop bilateral dialogues which will allow the two countries to share information and materials.

The agreement was signed during the Columbian president’s recent visit to Mexico. Diego Molano Vega, Mexico’s minister for IT and telecommunications, met with his Mexican counterpart, Dionisio Friscione, to sign the agreement.

Friscione said that he hopes the arrangement will benefit Mexico and Columbia in a number of regional and international forums, including the Inter-American Telecommunications Commission (CITEL), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Mesoamerican Project.

Latin America boasts a vibrant and growing telecoms market. At the close of 2010, Mexico accounted for 19% of the continent’s total market value, and Columbia for 5%. For more information, see here.
