Finland and Russia to improve communications ties

An agreement has been announced to co-ordinate the use of 900MHz frequency bands in mobile communications between Finland and Russia and provide increased high-speed data access near the border between the regions.

The 900MHz frequency band will be available on existing 3G mobile networks as the countries aim to secure ties to improve communications initiatives following a meeting between the Finnish-Russian working group on communications and information technology, held in Helsinki earlier this week.

Operators from both countries also began negotiations to improve wholesale prices for roaming, and set a benchmark to lower the maximum prices charged, set by the EU, applicable when users travel between European countries. Russian operators are also keen to secure practical co-operation in intelligent transport systems between the regions and could implement such initiatives on the existing road section between Helsinki and St Petersburg.

The working group’s next meeting will be held in early 2012.
