Mobile games revenue to surpass $11 billion by 2015

Revenue from mobile games is estimated to generate at least $11 billion in the next five years from in-game purchasing, according to Juniper Research.

In-game purchasing will overtake pay per download, becoming the main earner for mobile games by 2013. The report found that in-game purchase design was successfully able to grab the attention of the user, who after first using the game is able to make additional purchases, such as extra levels.

The greatest volume of mobile game users bringing in the highest revenue was found in China, with the least being in Africa and the Middle East.

The report also found that while prominent games are likely to have a high number of downloads, many still only achieve small download figures. Apple’s iPhone and App store has set the benchmark for the mobile games industry, with high rates of revenue for developers and development platforms which have taken advantage of the advancements in handset technology.
