Ericsson is to incorporate Sinch’s SMS Function (SMSF), a cloud-native 3GPP-specified messaging product into its core network to support its global 5G rollout.

Sinch’s SMS technology, which many IoT devices will depend on, will continue to support person to person as well as application to person messaging and will extend further to support new use cases,

Ericsson’s Messaging in One (MiO) portfolio already uses Sinch to deliver messaging products to 20 mobile operating customers across the world.

“We are pleased to extend the Sinch-Ericsson partnership to also include SMSF and address the messaging needs of mobile operators now embracing 5G. Sinch has proven that they can meet Ericsson’s stringent requirements and fulfill the high expectations of Ericsson’s customers”, said Nils Viklund, head of solution area packet core at Ericsson.

The first deliveries of the Sinch SMSF as part of Ericsson’s core network are expected to take place during 2020.
