Verizon is to expand its 5G ultra wideband services from two US cities to a total of 22, the company has said, and then go to 30.

The move follows AT&T’s announcement earlier in the month that it would also expand 5G to 22 cities this year – a different 22, though.

Verizon’s service will be available on the 5G Samsung Galaxy S10 phone, the company said yesterday.

Ronan Dunne (pictured), the former boss of O2 UK who is now president of Verizon’s consumer business, said: “The Galaxy S10 5G on Verizon’s 5G ultra wideband network will give our customers access to incredible speeds and the latest and greatest streaming, augmented-reality, gaming, and consumer and business applications that bring us into a future powered by 5G.”

The company said that 5G ultra wideband is now available in Chicago and Minneapolis, but the service will be expanded to Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Des Moines, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Little Rock, Memphis, Phoenix, Providence, San Diego, Salt Lake City and Washington DC.

Meanwhile AT&T said earlier this month that its “standards-based, mobile 5G network” is live in parts of a dozen cities – Atlanta, Austin, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Los Angeles , Louisville, Nashville, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Raleigh, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Waco. It will add Chicago, Las Vegas and Minneapolis to take the total to 22, the same number as in AT&T’s target.
