Ghana minister calls for shared fibre networks to improve access

Ghana’s minister of communications Ursula Owusu Ekuful has called on telecoms companies to share their fibre infrastructure to improve broadband access.

According to the Ecofin news agency, she has encouraged carriers to develop a sharing code that will protect their interests while ensuring healthy competition and a better consumer experience.

“We have a lot of fibre around the big cities while most parts of the country are not covered,” she said. “We cannot continue this way. It is very expensive to lay down fibres that remain underutilised.”

Owusu Ekuful was speaking at the opening of the Broadband Ghana Forum in Accra, described as an opportunity to initiate a public dialogue on the most effective method of implementing the national broadband policy.

Owusu Ekuful said that pooling of telecom infrastructure would improve broadband access and contribute a reduction in the costs of telecoms companies and the cost of the internet.
