Avanti signs $10 million contract with Viasat

Avanti Communications, the UK-based satellite operator, has signed a two-year contract with Viasat, the global communications company, in a deal worth $10 million.

Under the terms of the agreement Viasat will get leased capacity on a steerable beam as part of the newly launched Avanti HYLAS 4 satellite.

“Partnering with Avanti will give us access to steerable Ka-band satellite coverage and capacity to further enhance connectivity services for global government applications on Viasat’s Best Available Network. We expect easy integration of the HYLAS 4 satellite capacity into our global network—enabling us to quickly bring capacity to where our customer demand exists,” said Ken Peterman, president of government systems at Viasat.

The HYLAS 4 "will provide high speed connectivity to our growing customer base across broadband, enterprise, carrier and government customers", said Avanti. The satellite will double the capacity of its existing fleet and will cover at least 35 countries.

As a result of the partnership early this morning, Avanti shares climbed 19.9% to 5.88p on the London Stock Exchange.

Avanti’s contract with Viasat reflects the winning qualities of our HYLAS 4 satellite. This is a confirmation that our new carrier strategy helps operators to increase addressable markets and drive customer satisfaction without additional satellite and launch capex spend,” added Kyle Whitehill, CEO of Avanti Communications.

Viasa recently launched a satellite-enabled Wifi hotspot service called Community Wifi to most of Mexico. The new offering will bring affordable Wifi directly to consumers’ devices in areas where traditionally internet connectivity was unavailable.
