Telxius and Equinix partner on cable landing station at Virginia Beach

Telxius has partnered with Equinix to deliver next-generation subsea cable landing station architecture to support the MAREA and BRUSA subsea cable systems.

The partnership sees the two firms extending backhaul capacity on both cables from the MAREA and BRUSA cable landing station on Virginia Beach, where both terminate, to the Equinix DC2 International Business Exchange data centre.

Jim Poole, VP of business development at Equinix, said: “With this next-generation cable landing station design, the cables extend directly to an Equinix IBX data centre. That means any user of a subsea cable system that lands inside one of our Equinix global data centre termination points has instant, low-latency access to a host of vibrant industry ecosystems inside Equinix, and that’s a huge advantage.”

The 4,000 mile MAREA subsea cable, which Telxius has recently opened for business, is a joint project with Facebook and Microsoft. It connects Virginia Beach in the US with Sopelana, Spain.

Telxius – the infrastructure arm of Telefónica, is also building the BRUSA cable linking Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza, Brazil, with San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Virginia Beach.

Rafael Arranz, COO of Telxius’s cable business, said: “This new cable landing station design effectively connects the data centre and submarine communications worlds and opens the door to faster growth in bandwidth rates for our customers. This cutting-edge architecture leverages the ultra-high capacity of BRUSA and MAREA, two of the highest capacity cables ever built.”
