Bell Canada fibre to reach 1.3m Toronto homes

Bell Canada’s all-fibre network is to reach 1.3 million homes and businesses in the Greater Toronto area, stretching to the US border, the company has announced.

The project is part of a wider fibre networking project that uses 240,000km of fibre in the provinces Québec, Ontario and Manitoba plus Canada’s Atlantic provinces.

“Bell began the $1.5 billion Toronto project in 2015 and worked closely with the city and utility companies to roll out the network as efficiently and quickly as possible,” said Ivan Mihaljevic, president of BCE Nexxia and head of Bell Canada Wholesale.

Bell’s all-fibre cities now include Québec City, Trois-Rivières, Saint-Jérôme and Gatineau in Québec, Cornwall, Kingston, Toronto, North Bay and Sudbury in Ontario, and Steinbach and The Pas in Manitoba.

Bell launched its Montréal fibre project in 2017. Additional major deployments include 60,000 locations in the city of Oshawa, east of Toronto.

“Bell invests more in its broadband networks and services than any other communications company in Canada,” said Mihaljevic. “Today we offer the most direct fibre-to-the-premises connections in Canada, plus links to 28 Bell Canada data centres in Canada and 14 meet-me points in the US and beyond.”

Bell Canada has also launched a point of presence in two locations in London, England, providing direct, low latency access between North America and Europe through Canada.
