Capacity boost for Georgia-Bulgaria cable across Black Sea

Caucasus Online has upgraded its 1,200km Black Sea subsea fibre network to carry up to 5Tbps by using 100Gbps transponders.

The company, based in Tbilisi, Georgia, said that the cable needed upgrading “as intercontinental data traffic continues to drive bandwidth demands to new levels”. The cable links Poti on the eastern shore of the Black Sea with Balchik on the Bulgarian coast.

“As we assessed the future of cable infrastructure installed across the Black Sea, it was clear we needed a turn-key solution to address concerns with low data transfer capacity and our existing 100G network assets,” said Caucasus Online CEO Giorgi Shanidze.

His company used Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme system for subsea cables, which integrates multi-protocol and low-latency capabilities.

“We are providing even more effective and reliable high-bandwidth data transfer across the region,” said Shanidze.

Caucasus Online is the sole owner of the cable, which was laid by what is now TE Subcom 10 years ago. The Bulgarian landing station is connected to Frankfurt in Germany.

Caucasus Online said it is working to increase the speed and capacity of data transfers across its existing submarine cable, while offering additional benefits such as the ability to adjust bandwidth in real-time to optimize capacity and fibre investment.

Ciena developed the network design and worked on the project with German company NUTS:iX.

Ciena said its network management system provides Caucasus Online with a comprehensive solution to manage mission-critical functions of its network such as inventory management and wavelength provisioning.
