Colt launches Spectrum service for IQ Network

Colt Technology Services has unveiled a new product which offers wholesale and ultra-high bandwidth customers the ability to build multiple 100G waves between two points on a metro, national or international basis.

The Colt Spectrum product will give Colt customers an allocation of spectrum on the London-based carrier’s IQ Network, which spans Colt-owned infrastructure in 29 countries across four continents.

The Colt IQ Network is a 100Gbps optimised network distributed to 800+ data centres and carrier hotels around the world, optimised for SDN, NFV and cloud services. Colt Spectrum gives customers the ability to light spectrum using their own equipment, acting as an alternative to long-haul dark fibre solutions.

Colt said its Spectrum service should appeal to wholesale customers, as well as those specific verticals which have demands for ultra-high bandwidth connectivity, such as media industry customers and content providers.

“Colt’s customers have a variety of connectivity solutions needs. Today, carriers are contending with enormous growth in international bandwidth demand, particularly as video and content proliferates,” said Andrew Edison, vice president, wholesale at Colt.

“Connectivity to internet exchanges and aggregation points is now critical to the success of any digital business. Colt recognises that some organisations need full control over the network connecting these points, without the expenditure associated with procuring Dark Fibre. This requirement is addressed by our innovative Spectrum product.”

Colt recently announced an expansion its IQ Network to 13 new locations in North America. The company has already extended the service to Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore after starting in Europe, but the North American extension is a major leap for the carrier.

According to Edison, new cities include Toronto, Canada plus Seattle, LA, San Francisco, Phoenix, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, Ashburn, Newark and New York City, all in the US.

“It means we have 100Gbps links to the west and east coasts of North America,” he added. “Now our European clients can deliver content direct to North America and our clients there can deliver to Europe.”
