The total capacity of TEA link between the western and eastern Russian border will reach 2Tbps, says the company, which plans to put the expansion into operation this year.
The new links will be implemented using 100Gbps channels and will ensure delivery of any traffic to be sent by international operators between Europe and Asia.
“Further development of our TEA project is one of the key goals of the Rostelecom wholesale business,” said Natalia Kryuchkova, vice president for carrier business in the group. “Major customers of the service are largest carriers in the European and Asian regions.”
This year’s upgrade follows a previous upgrade that started in 2016. The company said the first stage had already generated $30 million worth of extra business in 2017-18 – and attracted extra traffic to its transit network.
Kryuchkova added: “Rostelecom expects significant sales growth owing to new network capabilities, including engagement of new partners for transiting traffic.”
The next stage is a further increase in the backbone speed to 10Tbps, said Rostelecom.
The first transit circuits on what is now TEA were provisioned between Russia and China in early 2004. The TEA backbone can reach major traffic exchange sites in Europe, China, Japan and Hong Kong and provide interconnections on the Russian borders with core networks of the largest European and Asian carriers, said Rostelecom.
