Zayo Group has added another data centre to its portfolio with the acquisition of a 62,000 total sq ft facility in McLean, Virginia.

The acquisition, which includes tenants, data centre systems, and long-term leases, was driven by strong demand in the Washington DC area for low-latency colocation, interconnection and access to fibre infrastructure.

The data centre, Zayo’s second colocation facility in Northern Virginia, is located at 1764 Old Meadow Lane. Zayo plans to upgrade the critical power at the site to 3MW and enhance systems resiliency, security, audit certifications, and network connectivity.

“Northern Virginia is one of the most important data centre markets in the world, with a diverse base of service providers, enterprises, and government agencies all contributing to strong demand,” said TJ Karklins, senior vice president of Zayo’s zColo business segment.

“This acquisition provides an important second Northern Virginia location for our client solutions and creates a strong data centre option for firms located downtown and in the heart of the beltway. Our deep, dense fibre footprint in the region facilitates global connectivity, further enhancing the value proposition of the McLean location.”

The facility, which is on-net to Zayo fibre, will provide a low-latency colocation option for government agencies, web-scale companies, cloud providers and other large enterprises, especially those located in downtown Washington DC. The data centre will tether directly to Zayo’s data centre in Ashburn, Virginia and to Zayo’s network point of presence (PoP) on M Street.

Back in September 2017, Zayo expanded its Atlanta data centre presence with a new facility at 1150 White Street SW and expanded its infrastructure in Colorado by buying a fourth data centre, at Westminster, just north of Denver.

In other news, Interdata recently selected Zayo Group as the provider of its dark fibre infrastructure in France, adding around 50km of new fibre to its existing network, and Zayo was also selected by a global webscale customer for dark fibre services on its 600-route mile Reno to Umatilla route, currently under development.

Dan Caruso, CEO of Zayo Group, has been rebuilding the company and recently spoke to Capacity about bring back energy and ambition into the company.
